Aqaba, Jordan: Hundreds of Aqaba schoolchildren joined local dignitaries to provide a colourful launch for a symbolic peace message that will travel over 300kms by foot to Amman for the launch of the global initiative Generations For Peace’s fifth camp.
Under the message ‘pass it on’, the baton was handed to the first of 40 runners for a journey that will take in all the towns and villages on the route north until it reaches its destination of Al Hussein Sports City where it will be received by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, founder of Generations For Peace and President of the Jordan Olympic Committee.
The Prince will accept the baton on behalf of the 80 Generations For Peace delegates from 13 countries who will take part in the 10-day camp, starting on December 7th.
Generations for Peace has become a renowned international initiative since its inception in 2007 by teaching leaders of youth on how to use sport to make a difference within communities that have been ravaged by divide and conflict. The results of the cascade programme have been staggering with thousands of youngsters touched by the project in 28 countries to date.
The Generations For Peace baton is supported by the Jordan Olympic Committee, Higher Council of Youth, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), Aqaba Governate and Amman Municipality.
