‘Coaching for Peace’ takes a bow at global initiative

Amman, Jordan: A colourful fun-packed coaching technique has been introduced for the first time to the global initiative Generations For Peace, which has launched its fifth international camp in Amman, Jordan.

‘Coaching For Peace’ has been created by the Generations For Peace sports department to be included in the 10-programme which will teach 80 leaders of youth from 13 countries on how sport can make a difference within troubled communities that have been divided by war and conflict.

While basketball, football and softball will be introduced as sports-specific modules as the camp progresses, ‘Coaching For Peace’ made a big impact on the first day and was given a resounding thumbs-up from the delegates attending from Afghanistan, Burundi, India, Jordan, Nepal, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Sri Lanka as well as first time participants Indonesia, Kenya, and Timor-Leste.

“The smiling faces say it all,” said Generations For Peace Founder and Chairman HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein. “and these are the delegates learning new techniques, imagine the impact that this can have on children living in an area that has witnessed widespread devastation. Sport really can make a difference and these simple ways of bringing children together will be cascaded to communities across the world by the delegates that are with us here in Amman.”

Generations For Peace has already held four hugely successful international camps since its 2007 inception; three in Amman, Jordan and earlier this year in Abu Dhabi, UAE, held under the patronage of Founding Partner HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

As well as the sports-specific coaching modules, the curriculum stresses peace building; focusing on the need to build tolerance and understanding so that youth from communities in conflict can find common grounds rather than be divided by differences. The sessions are delivered by leading international peace education and communication trainers and professional sport coaches.

The cascade programme has resulted in over 200 Generations For Peace programmes being instigated in countries to where graduates have returned to after their training for the Generations For Peace Pioneer Certification Programme. Up to 40,000 children have benefited from Generations For Peace activity to date.

This latest camp also marks the continuation of the initiative’s relationship with Samsung Electronics who are Official Partners while the International Softball Federation has supported Generations For Peace at each of its Camps to date as a Programme Partner. British football team Brighton & Hove Albion will be sending one of its coaches to provide assistance in the football programme while Camp 09 Official Suppliers will include Danao Juice, SAMA Mineral Water, Fly Sportswear and Mr Chips provided by M. Haddad & Sons Co.
